Erich Kadow Interpretation and Design Ltd

The Bowes Museum wished to greatly enhance the display and interpretation of the Silver Swan, an object of national and international importance and often the primary reason for a visit to the Museum. At the same time, improvements were needed to maximise access to objects from the extensive silver and metalwork collection, many of which have not been on public display for many years.

Our team, working for Continuum, were commissioned to create a new gallery in Room 30 to display the diverse silver and metalwork collection and relate this collection to the Silver Swan positioned in the adjacent central picture gallery. We also needed to address current visitor frustrations regarding access to the Silver Swan, providing media-based alternatives.

The design and implementation of all the displays cases, specialist mounts, interactives, media and graphics have been completed and the Silver Swan & Precious Metals Gallery has been open to the public since April 2009.
